A very interesting op-ed by Neal Gabler appeared in the Los Angeles Times today (November 30, 2008): The GOP's McCarthy Gene. Gabler (among other things) is a panelist on Fox's alleged media watchdog show, "Fox News Watch."... (original story)

(updated below - Update II) The New York Times's David Barstow, whose excellent and aggressive journalism led to the uncovering last April of the Pentagon's domestic propaganda program involving network "military analysts," today returns to this topic with another lengthy front-page expos... As you know, I’ve been doing some “virtual” psychological diagnoses (here and here) for Bill O’Reilly; as he does demonstrate, what appear to be, symptoms of a plethora of mental health disorders. A recent interview of O’Reilly, at a book signing on Long Island, showed (once again) that he does seem to live in a fantasy world - one in which he grew up in a humble, “hardscrapple” environment which contributed to his “working class hero” myth that he continues (as shown in the interview) to promote (here and here_). Pathological lying is not considered a clinical disorder; but ... (original story)

With a new administration ascending to power in a matter of weeks, witnessing Beltway denizens desperately scampering to re-write their role in the last eight years is nothing short of dizzying: Tom Friedman, New York Times, today: I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect Iraq to have relations with Israel anytime soon, but the fact that it may be developing an independent judiciary is good news. It’s a reminder of the most important reason for the Iraq war: to try to collaborate with Iraqis to build progressive politics and rule of law in the heart of the Arab-Muslim worl... (original story)

This week on CounterSpin: Bailing out the Big Three. GM, Ford and Chrysler are on the brink of total failure, we're told. In a season of corporate bailouts of all sorts, this one is meeting more resistance—in part because union autoworkers, we're told, are making too much money. Mark Brenner of Labor Notes will join us to talk about it. (original story)

Despite the notion that the O’Reilly "Factor" is an opinion show about news, there really should be some obligation to accuracy in reporting the issues being discussed – especially on the “fair and balanced” network. Laura Ingraham is an attorney and really should be able to provide accurate background information especially on legal issues; but instead she is focused on scoring shots in the “culture war” which, on Fox, is also a war on gays.... During a Hannity & Colmes interview last night (11/24/08), Republican Governor of North Carolina Mark Sanford, introduced as “one of the rising stars of the Republican Party,” cracked up when Alan Colmes asked if Sarah Palin might be one of the future stars of her party. He quickly recovered by offering the faint praise that she'd be “among the mix.” But then he soon moved on to name other names that did not include hers. With video.... (original story)

The latest right wing topic du jour is, according to these "Christians," Barack Obama’s lack of Christian piety. Of course, in rightwingworld, “piety” is defined as public displays of religiosity chief among them being church attendance. Who cares if you’re doing deals with shady lobbyists or toe tapping in public bathrooms? If your posterior is connected to a suitably Christian church pew, every Sunday, you pass muster with Fox’s Christian heartland. Last night’s (November 24th) “Grapevine” served to inform its audience that Barack Obama is on the road to perdition.... (original story)

O'Reilly's Christmas crusade does seem to have, as did the crusades of history, an anti-Semitic component; as it smacks of forcing non Christians to recognize Christianity - a "Christianity" that, according to O'Reilly, is somehow tied into the secular activities of Christmas which (as I noted in my... As I have already noted, in an earlier thread, Bill O’Reilly appears to have some serious mental health issues. In addition to all the other personality disorders that I cited, I need to add “delusional disorder” because Bill certainly fits the description with regard to his bogus and bizarre ... (updated below - Update II) An article in The Hill, describing how profoundly House Democrats will miss the leadership of Rahm Emanuel, recounts this episode, involving the vote by Democratic Rep. Tim Walz of Minnesota in favor of the dreadful Protect America Act in August of last year (h/t Matt Stoller): Members said [Emanuel] had a phenomenal knowledge of their districts, and he kept up to date well after the campaign ended. Rep. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) said one of his supporters wrote a letter to the editor of a small paper in his district, complaining about his vote on ... (original story)

(updated below) As we've seen many times and in many contexts, one of the most empty-headed, trite and deceitful pundit techniques is to take one's own viewpoint and, without an iota of polling data or other empirical support, attribute it to the "average/ordinary/moderate American" and then, with deep concern, warn political leaders that they will harm themselves politically -- will alienate the fair-minded moderate voters -- if they don't follow that view. Even for the most ideologically extreme pundits who rely on this tactic, it always just so happens that their own ... (original story)

(Updated below - Update II - Update III - Update IV) There is much discussion about the signals Barack Obama is sending regarding whether Senate Democrats should strip Joe Lieberman of his powerful position as Chairman of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Reports yesterday indicate that Obama is telling Senate leaders he wants Lieberman to remain in the Democratic caucus, but it's unclear whether or not that means Obama wants Lieberman to keep his Chairmanship, how much of this is designed to distance Obama from any eventual confrontation, whether thi...
